The polarizing filter is still one of the most frequently used filters in photography. Polarizers allow only the light of a particular oscillation plane to pass through. All other beams are filtered out. This filtration results in a reduction of reflection on glass and water surfaces or lacquers. At the same time, they increase color saturation and enhance contrast. Objects behind the glass (shop windows, car windows) become visible again. In landscape surveys, the polarizing filter has its maximum effect at a recording angle of 90 degrees to the sun.

How it works
Circular (CPL) and linear polarizing filters work according to the same principle. Optical gratings on the filter film ensure that only linear light waves reach the lens whose orientation coincide with that of the grating. In contrast to a linear polarizing filter, the circular polarizing filter has an additional lamda / 4 plate. This platelet is responsible for splitting the linear light beams previously generated in the polarizing filter into all components and at an angle of 90 degrees to one another. At the same time, a component is delayed by a quarter wavelength. Thus all the polarization directions are present behind the filter.

The polarizing filter is the only filter whose effect can not be achieved by means of image processing software. The reflections have to be blown out at the time of the recording, afterwards this is no longer possible.
